Wallywhy100: the newest spaceship by legendary Wally Yachts shipyard
This is exactly the case with the new wallywhy100 that made her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2024
Some say the boat looks like a tram, others will compare her to a race car, and both will be right. However, it is important to note that a yacht’s unusual exterior does not appear out of a desire to attract attention (it is more of a side effect). In fact, it is the result of particular characteristics of a vessel and new approaches to the arrangement of space on board.
Design
Just like with houses, the approach to yacht design can be outside-in or inside-out. In the first case, the object is given the desired exterior, while interior space is arranged with all the external restrictions in mind. The second option is initially more aimed at comfort, so it is the desired arrangement of interior space that affects the exterior directly, making it quite unusual at times.
When Luca Bassani, Wally founder and chief designer, and the shipyard’s design team sat down to create a new type of motor yacht, their priority was interior volume and all the possibilities it brings. A wide body and a sheer bow typical of the entire wallywhy line ensure ample space on board, but do not turn the boat into a large but clumsy barge and allow her to keep good performance characteristics.
With a length of 21.46 m the wallywhy100, which is the entry model in her line, is similar to her larger sisters in many ways. The impressive beam of 5.73 m makes the hull really generous and stable, providing the interior space found on far larger boats.
The absence of a flybridge and the single-level main deck design make moving about the boat easier and the transition from exterior to interior spaces smoother. The low stealth-style glass superstructure makes the model unmistakably Wally, ensures abundance of light inside and, what matters most, the feeling of contact with the sea.
Interior and layout
The main deck is a generous single area for relaxation and entertainment. More than a half of its length is exterior space protected from rain and sun with a hard top above, and from unwanted attention with high bulwarks on the sides.
There is a dining area, a lounge with sofas, and there are sunbeds next to the ample bathing platform aft.
The bulwarks here fold down to create a large terrace by the water with an area of 14 sq.m. The hydraulic hi-lo platform can be lowered to the water or used as a storage or a lift for a tender and water toys up to 3.6 m long.
There is an enclosed saloon on the main deck forward, with a living area and a helm station with two cocoon seats. However, the saloon can be easily opened up by removing the sliding aft doors.
The exterior foredeck is quite laconic with just a couple of sunbeds, but highly private thanks to the high bulwarks.
The interior design created by Italian Vallicelli Design Studio allows for a mix of built-in and free-standing furniture. Carbon fibre elements are used along with wood, textiles in light shades and soft lighting, creating a minimalist, yet informal and cosy atmosphere in Wally’s best traditions.
Two staircases next to the helm station lead down to the lower deck: one to the galley and crew accommodation, and the other is access to the three cabins for the owner and the guests.
The owner’s cabin fills the full beam space amidships. There is a king size bed in the centre, a sofa to starboard, and a master bathroom to port, behind the glass wall. At the touch of a button the smart glass turns cloudy, ensuring privacy, but allowing natural light from the large hull windows for the rest of the time.
There are two more ensuite cabins, one configured as double (with a large bed for two) and the other as twin (two separate beds).
Performance characteristics
The name of Wally has traditionally been associated not only with extraordinary looks, but performance characteristics, too: there are motor wallypowers and wallytenders capable of reaching up to 50 knots, as well as sailing boats winning prestigious regattas. Although this time Wally has chosen not to focus solely on speed – and it applies to the entire wallywhy range, too – performance remains an important aspect.
The Wallywhy100 is equipped with twin Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 of 1000 hp each. They deliver a top speed of 27 knots and a cruising speed of 24 knots, giving her a range of 340 nautical miles.
To sum up, we can say that it is a truly unusual model not only for the market, but for Wally yard, too, which is well-known for building boats unlike anything the global industry might offer.
