The newest Super Sub model by Dutch U-Boat Worx was designed for private use and, according to its creators, represents a new era of underwater performance
The submersible's dimensions are 6.5 х 3.27 х 2.14 m, and it weighs 9 tonnes. With the horizontal thrust of 100kW and the maximum speed of 9 knots, it can reach the depth of 300 meters.
The Super Sub also boasts excellent manoeuverability and can execute inclines and declines of up to 45 degrees. At the same time, its hyper-precise sonar system continuously scans the seabed, ensuring the submarine autonomously adjusts its trajectory and levels out into a parabolic path before reaching the maximum depth.
The pressure-tolerant battery system of 62 kWh ensures up to eight hours of underwater adventure and light in the cabin. Each submarine is equipped with a minimum of 96 hours of life support, including oxygen supply, CO2 scrubbers to filter the air, emergency battery power for life support monitoring, communication with the surface, light and even food and water.
The sub is accessed via a top hatch. The transparent acrylic hull is large enough for comfortable accommodation of a pilot and two passengers.
For all of the above to function safely, the U-Boat Worx designers had to apply a lot of unique engineering solutions. All the project documentation and construction process were under DNV (Det Norske Veritas) control, which has been advancing safety, sustainability and risk management across maritime, oil and gas and sustainable energy sectors for over 160 years.
The DNV certification means the vessel can operate even under extreme conditions, so a simple check was not enough: every component, process and system were independently reviewed. By passing all the trials and tests successfully, the Super Sub has confirmed its compliance with the highest DNV standards, including not only human safety and vessel integrity, but also environmental protection.
“The Super Sub represents a major leap forward in personal submersible capability,” said Wilbert Beilsma, Commercial Director of U-Boat Worx. “Achieving DNV certification is a testament to the engineering excellence and dedication of our team. We’re entering a new chapter where private owners can explore the ocean at speeds once thought impossible.”
By the way, U-Boat Worx also announces that now New Super Sub orders are available both as new build and via wet lease options, making high-speed underwater exploration more accessible for private owners, yacht programs and expedition operators.
