In collaboration Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi, Italian Sanlorenzo shipyard has announced its innovative project called LIFE MYSTIC, which stands for Methanol for Yachting Sustainable Energy Transition Applied to Internal Combustion Engines

The goal of the project is to create the world’s first green bi-fuel superyacht by 2027. As part of the project, the yacht will be powered by two high-speed 4-stroke MAN diesel engines and two 4-stroke diesel generators adapted to operate on bi-fuel green methanol and diesel. The technology created in collaboration with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi will ensure that the superyacht can switch between these kinds of fuel as necessary.

Sanlorenzo will also convert traditional fuel tanks to accommodate methanol and redesign the distribution system to meet safety standards. Thus, the problem of integrating methanol tanks into a yacht’s relatively small space will be solved.

Methanol is considered to be one of the most promising fuels for the future of maritime transport, particularly when produced from renewable sources, which makes it a zero-emission fuel. The key obstacle here is the availability of green methanol, which is essential for the project’s success. Collaboration with regulatory bodies and the supply chain is crucial in order to update fuel regulations, particularly in Italy, where methanol has not been recognized as a fuel yet.

LIFE MYSTIC is part of Sanlorenzo‘s “Road to 2030” plan. The yard recently launched the 50-metre Almax (Sanlorenzo 50 Steel range), which is the world’s first superyacht using the Reformer Fuel Cell green methanol system for power generation.
