Sanlorenzo SX 100: a versatile boat for any ideas and travels
The Sanlorenzo SX100 was first unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival in the autumn of 2023
It is a fourth mode in the SX series: crossover yachts, which - according to Sanlorenzo shipyard that invented them – “blurs the boundaries between flybridge and explorer-type yachts”. It is somewhat similar to the car industry, where crossovers are a mix of a passenger car and an offroader.
Despite having a brutal looking design of the superstructure with reverse-angle windscreens, the SX100 is not an explorer. However, this model has a number of features that make her stand out compared to other classic flybridge yachts.
Speed and range
The Sanlorenzo SX100 semi-displacement hull is capable of reaching a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots. So if you wish, you can go fast, consuming about 500 litres an hour at 2200 rpm (while the maximum for these engines is 2400 rpm). Thus, the range is about 580 miles at a cruising speed.
At the same time, this type of hull is equally efficient in the displacement mode, which can’t be said about the planing yachts that don’t like going slowly: it won’t be really comfortable for the passengers on board. At the speed of 10 knots the Sanlorenzo SX 100’s range increases up to 1400 nautical miles, which is a great advantage for long, leisurely cruises. The semi-displacement hull ensures a stable, comfortable run.
Tender and water toys
Another important distinction from an expedition yacht is the capability to carry quite a substantial collection of water (and not only) equipment. On a flybridge yacht it normally comes down to a small tender garage, although quite often a tender and/or a jet ski is stored on the bathing platform or a flybridge. In this respect crossover yachts are a good compromise.
The Sanlorenzo SX100’s aft deck is a huge free space for recreation by the water. When the boat is underway, it turns into an open “garage”, which can accommodate a large tender (5.65 m) and lots of water toys. When at anchor, they can easily be launched with the help of a hydraulic bathing platform and a crane integrated into one of the sides. Both sides can fold down and form terraces over the water, making the area of the beach club comparable to the main deck saloon.
Strictly speaking, the Sanlorenzo SX100 has two saloons: one can access the lounge below deck through the glass sliding doors right from the aft area by the water. It can be both a beach club and another more private enclosed saloon right by the water.
Interior and layouts
Sanlorenzo always offers different layout options, but what is most interesting is that there may be really unusual versions among them, developed by “guest” designers (like for instance Patricia Urquiola) or the art-director of the shipyard, Piero Lissoni, who we told you more about here. The first Sanlorenzo SX100, unveiled in Cannes, was just like this.
According to Lissoni, “It used to be that a yacht and everything aboard it had to be made by a yacht designer, but I’m not a nautical designer and I don’t want to become one. I’m an architect, and when I design a yacht, I approach it just as I would any other project, aiming to create something functional, comfortable and beautiful. Outsiders like me have changed the rules in yachting.”
Indeed, Lissoni always brings unusual details to his projects: spiral, floating glass staircases that suddenly transform spaces, exquisite pieces of furniture and décor. In his version (shown in the photographs illustrating this article) the Sanlorenzo SX100 has four cabins: the master suite is on the main deck forward, and three guest cabins, crew quarters and a galley are below deck.
Other layout options from Sanlorenzo offer lots of other opportunities. For example, locating all the cabins below deck, making a dining area with panoramic views forward, move a galley up or down depending on the owner’s preferences. The same refers to the interior, too: anything you like.
Flybridge and a helm station
Yachts of this size (about 100 ft) normally have their main helm station forward, where the SX100 has either a master suite or a dining room. So the SX100 has only one helm station located on the flybridge, which is partially enclosed and turned into a skylounge. However, it doesn’t mean that the yacht can only be handled when you are locked up indoors.
In good weather the aft door can be opened, and the power side glazing can be lowered, turning this place into a traditional flybridge. In addition to the helm station, there is also a bar and a dining area, and there is an open area for sunbathing aft – in addition to another beach area at the bow.
When you look at how much Sanlorenzo managed to fit in on board this 100-ft yacht and how many layout options are offered, you start to understand why there is a crossover yachts boom on the market and why other shipyards started implementing similar solutions. Looks like the conventional principles of yacht design that Piero Lissoni talked about are really changine. Or at least Sanlorenzo violates them not only regularly and heartily, but with great success.
