Hong Kong-based Cheoy Lee shipyard has presented its new almost 39-metre model currently known as 127 Discovery
This expedition yacht’s design resembles commercial vessels, which is not surprising: Cheoy Lee has been building all kinds of vessels, including commercial ones, for decades, and has gained a strong position in the market thanks to its good price-performance ratio.
As the 127 Discovery was designed as an explorer boat, the priorities were seaworthiness and serviceability. This is a three-deck yacht with a full-displacement steel hull and a totally enclosed raised pilothouse for maximum visibility.
Taking into account the fact that the yacht is quite tall, the designers had thought of lowering her centre of gravity. Thus, the large tender is stored on the main deck aft, and not on the upper deck or a flybridge as it is often the case on board explorer yachts of this size. The beach club one level lower is “packed” safely inside the hull and can be closed with a transom door completely.
Like most explorer boats, Cheoy Lee 127 Discovery is not very fast. Her top speed is 13 knots, while her range is up to 4000 nautical miles. The yacht offers accommodation for 10 passengers in five cabins. The owner’s suite with his-and-her bathrooms is located on the main deck forward, while four guest cabins are located below deck.
One of the 127 Discovery’s standout features is her crew area, which is really large for her size: there are four cabins below deck and a captain’s cabin next to the pilothouse. They are capable of accommodating a crew of eight to eleven. A yacht under 40 metres can easily be operated with a far smaller crew, but this solution ensures a highest level of service on board both for the owner and the guests. Moreover, the yard is ready to equip the boat generously with a full laundry, a huge galley with an ample freezer and a dumbwaiter going all the way from the lower deck to the sundeck.
