Together with the fuel cells technology and innovative computer control, the next generation wing sail will allow not only to make operation easier, but also to reduce emissions considerably
One of the oldest Dutch shipyards has developed Aera in collaboration with Cor D. Rover (general design) and Artemis Technologies (naval architecture). The latter came from Artemis Racing crew that took part in the America’s Cup races using wing sails.
In terms of aerodynamics, wing sails can be compared to a plane wing: they are rigid and have adjustable flaps. The 35-metre wing sail made by Rondal utilizes no stays, shrouds, mainsheet or deck winches for operation.
Two electric engines can rotate the mast 360 degrees, while the wing with an area of 245 sq.m features flaps that can be deflected by hydraulic cylinders at an angle of up to 30 degrees, generating lift. Thus, depending on the position, the entire system gets a forward momentum or is locked in a neutral downwind position. The wing position is controlled by a computer, taking into account wind conditions and the route, which means there is actually no need for a crew, as the system steers the boat automatically.
“For some sailing superyachts, running lines, hoisting, and adjusting all sails can take half an hour or more. Aboard Aera, while raising the anchor, the captain enters the destination, sets the wing to automatic trim, the wing sail responds, and you are sailing in less than a minute," said Royal Huisman CEO, Jan Timmerman.
In addition, Aera will be equipped with a 580 kW battery bank charged by Rondal Hydro Generators or generators powered by HVO, which, according to the shipyard, will reduce CO2 emissions down by up to 89%. There is also an option to use low-temperature PEM hydrogen fuel cells. As a result of the test trials, the yacht’s provisional cruising speed will be 12 knots.
Aera’s exterior is quite sophisticated, too. Designer Cor D. Rover came up with a futuristic asymmetric profile and incredible area of exterior spaces of 694 sq.m!
“I didn’t need to create a beach club area because the entire yacht is a beach club with the emphasis on outdoor spaces, except for the cabins in the hulls. The fore and aft ends of the upper decks are at angles to the one above or below, creating different areas of light and shade on each deck. To prepare for cruising, the tenders are loaded on the centre section of the swim platform, which lifts to main deck level," said Cor D. Rover.
Aera will offer supermodern accommodation for up to ten guests, reminding more of a penthouse style than a yacht. The owner’s suite features a private deck and a huge pool with a glass bottom aft.
