Dutch shipyard Vitters has confirmed signing the contract to build a custom sailing superyacht featuring classic styling
The project with yard hull number 3097 was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman, who is planning to use the vessel for long-range worldwide cruising with his family, as well as taking part in "occasional" superyacht regattas.
At present, Dykstra Naval Architects has already started working on exterior design and naval architecture, while Vripack is in charge of the interior.
Gerard Dykstra, who founded his company back in 1969, has already earned the reputation of an A-lister in the yachting industry. He doesn’t only design from scratch, but also redesigns classic and modern performance sailing vessels, including the world's largest ones like the 90-meter schooner Athena, built by Royal Huisman, the revolutionary 88-meter Maltese Falcon by Perini Navi and her successor featuring the DynaRig system, too, the 106.7-meter Black Pearl by Oceanco.
The current Project SY 07 does not boast any revolutionary innovations, as the owner is a fan of classic yachts. The shipyard points out that the design drew inspiration from the golden age of sailing yachts early in the 20th century just before the arrival of motor vessels.
The initial rendering is classic: there is a plumb bow, a long bowsprit and an elongated overhanging stern, two retro-style rectangular superstructures finished in wood. Only the black composite mast of about 62 m (which is the Panamax limit) and modern boom reveal the fact that the yacht will boast good performance characteristics.
The yacht will be carrying a total of 1,200 sq.m of sail, featuring a square-top mainsail, reefed by a slab boom system. The telescopic lifting keel will extend the draft from 4.5 m to 6.9 m, which is an advantage both for races and shallow marinas.
“Our objective is to deliver a yacht that is balanced, efficient, and highly responsive. The naval architecture focuses on optimised hydrodynamics, refined geometry and careful weight control to ensure strong performance across a broad wind range”, said Mark Leslie-Miller of Dykstra Naval Architects. “Our naval architecture is developed with build feasibility and engineering precision in mind, and Vitters has the capability to execute complex solutions to the highest standard. The combination allows us to combine timeless looks with performance while maintaining exceptional quality and structural integrity”.
“The client's brief was for a distinctive interior, grounded in the traditional styling of 1920s and '30s classic sailing yachts, but reimagined for today. To reimagine does not mean to copy. A particular highlight will be the bar in the main saloon, which promises to be a real signature piece. The interior bears a genuinely fresh and novel design with real-world executability”, added Marnix J. Hoekstra, Co-Creative Director at Vripack.
With a hull of 53 m (LWL 48 m) and a beam of 9.42 m, the SY 07’s internal volume will 253 GT. The vessel will be large enough to accommodate eight guests across four luxurious cabins and a crew of seven.
The yacht will be built to Lloyd's classification. The keel laying ceremony is scheduled for January 2027, and the delivery is planned for February 2029.
