The Agios Nikolaos Marina plays a crucial role for yachting in the Aegean Sea as a safe haven in any storm, offering a full range of services and convenient access to Mirabello Bay and the surrounding picturesque islets
The marina is located in the centre of Agios Nikolaos on the eastern end of Crete, the largest of Greek islands. The nearest airport is in Heraklion, 64 km to the west, about an hour's drive away. The waters are well-protected from the wind, and the port operates all year round.
As a result of the €1.9 million upgrade completed in August 2026, the Agios Nikolaos Marina features not only better berths, utility networks and services, but also the development of the adjacent waterfront area.
Now the marina can accommodate 255 yachts up to 70 m in length. In addition to fixed concrete piers, there are also Italian floating pontoons, expanding mooring capabilities considerably. Each berth offers access to water supply and electricity. There is also safer access to the pontoons for people with disabilities now.
The dry-docking facilities can be home to over 160 vessels, complete with a 65-ton lift and a slip. The sailors are offered self-service laundry facilities, 24-hour video surveillance, modern fire safety systems and free Wi-Fi.
Solar panels and energy-efficient lamps have been installed as part of the upgrade: a smart lighting system with 41 LED lights have been added to the marina, as well as electric vehicle charging points.
The surrounding area has been cleared of haphazard car parking, although the location of the marina in the city center makes it possible to walk to the shops, taverns and bars on the main streets in just a couple of minutes anyway.
New public areas have appeared: pedestrian paths for strolling leisurely along the water and a dedicated open-air space for exhibitions, concerts and public events.
The Agios Nikolaos municipality said the project had also secured the marina’s tourist port license, an issue that had remained pending for more than 30 years. The solution of this issue opens up opportunities for further investment, funding and development, raising the level of service to international standards and strengthening Crete’s position as a centre of nautical tourism.
