The young German company, Pioneer Yachts, intends to fill in the gap in the segment of solar-electric multihulls capable of generating “green” energy in any weather

The shipyard founded by engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank in the city of Stralsund on Germany’s Baltic coast, applies a fundamentally different approach to yacht design. Instead of adapting a conventional powerboat platform to electric propulsion, from the outset vessels are conceived around solar-electric energy generation, storage and propulsion.

The catamaran is a blend of German engineering and contemporary Italian design: the PY60 was penned by Cossutti & Ganz of Udine, the interior is owed to Milan-based Micheletti + Partners. While working on the first PY60, Mike Frank and his team set the task of creating a practical cruiser built around efficiency, autonomy and operational simplicity.

The geometry of the hull with a length of 18.3 m (60 feet) and a beam of 9 m, as well as the superstructure proportions focus on maximum performance. The boat integrates solar panels, electric propulsion and diesel generators of 50 kW each into a comprehensive energy-management system designed to support reliable and convenient operation at sea.

The vessel can reach a top speed of 11 knots and a cruising speed of 7.5 knots and can be handled by the owner without a professional crew. At present, the PY60 is undergoing sea trials with Mike Frank at the helm, as he wishes to test his brainchild’s benefits and drawbacks personally.

“Pioneer One will be more than a showcase yacht; it will become our operational reference platform,” said Frank. “By using the yacht ourselves and monitoring its performance under real conditions, we can continue refining the concept and ensure that future boats are shaped by practical experience.”

The concept behind the living space is built around the idea of "smart comfort." The largest cockpit door in its class blurs the lines between the open deck and the saloon, creating a single-level lounge area.

Tinted panoramic windows ensure abundance of natural light, while guarding the guests’ privacy. Both hulls finish in swim platforms, while the flybridge features a vast sofa and a bar counter.

No details are currently available about the number of cabins, but according to the shipyard, the well thought out layout and finishing material will create a calm and soft atmosphere on board.

Pioneer One is set to make her official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 scheduled for 8-13 September.
