Greenline Yachts has made another step in the direction of responsible yachting by offering a solution for its entire range, which allows it to do without generators on board
A conventional way to provide comfort on board, when the engines are off, are diesel generators. They generate energy to power lighting, fridges, air conditioning and other onboard systems at anchor and in port. Their well-known shortcomings are noise, vibration, smell of diesel, fuel expenses and, certainly, emissions.
The new technology named Responsible Power Pack offered by Greenline can provide at least 48 hours of silent work from the batteries at anchor. All this time the owners are free to use all the onboard systems including air conditioning at full blast. This solution is a particularly good solution for the owners who still opt for conventionally powered Greenline yachts, who want to enhance the level of comfort on board and make their boat more eco-friendly.
Instead of a diesel generator, Greenline will fit a high-powered alternator that can take power from the engine when it runs and recharge a large lithium battery bank. This way, the yacht will reach its destination with full batteries, ready to ensure two days of silent operation of all systems at anchor. If the energy is used efficiently, the yacht’s autonomy can be a few days longer, for example thanks to the use of solar power for cooking and lighting.
The shipyard illustrates the way the Responsible Power Pack works with the help of one of its best-selling models, the 45-foot (14.43 m) Greenline 45. To cover hotel loads at anchor the yacht used to need an 11 kW, consuming 4 litres of fuel per hour. It often had to run non-stop in order to power the air conditioning unit, which amounted to the consumption of nearly 200 litres over a 48-hour period at anchor.
With the new Responsible Power Pack, it takes just 9 hours of motoring to fully recharge the 34.2 kWh batteries and provide emissions-free power for over 48 hours. It’s true that the additional load on the engine increases fuel consumption, but quite inconsiderably, while the emissions are up to 88% lower compared to the conventional diesel generator.
According to the yard’s Chief Commercial Officer, Luca Raumland, “by tapping the engine’s spare power when the yacht is under way, we can make non-hybrid models almost as efficient to operate as their hybrid alternatives. In fact, with careful use of the aircon, the solar panels fitted as standard to every yacht can fully replenish the batteries during the day and keep you emissions-free at anchor indefinitely.”
