The owner of the Leviathan, who is also the new owner of Oceanco, is the American billionaire, Gabe Newell, who bought the shipyard from Omani Barwani family in the summer of 2025, when the yacht was almost complete
The philosophy of Project Leviathan goes far beyond the conventional lifestyle on board luxury superyachts. The key idea is human-centricity: Gabe Newell consideres the yacht to be his floating residence, so he wanted it to be comfortable both for work and recreation and the layouts to facilitate socializing, not isolation.
“The goal was to consider where the most valuable experiences occur for the community of people onboard,” said Gabe Newell. “By increasing crew productivity, we can enable them to focus more on engaging with guests and creating meaningful experiences for everyone”.
“Leviathan challenged convention in a completely new and exciting way from an operational standpoint,” said interior designer Mark Berryman, who believes that the project broke new ground.
This is particularly evident in the interior layout, which was designed in order to break down the conventional separation into spaces for guests (22–26 people) and for the crew, the size of which on board the Leviathan can range from 33 to 3. For example, instead of a formal main saloon, there is a large common dining area, while the lounging areas, including a basketball court and sun decks, are meant for everyone.
There is also a communal gaming lounge, accommodating 15 gaming stations and two race simulators. To record this kind of approach to layouts, Oceanco uses a new term of “community-driven environment”.
Finishing material choices are crew-centric, too, so the choice was made in favour of durable, low-maintenance solutions. Thus, custom Bolidt decking was used instead of natural teak, and synthetic handrails instead of polished wood. The owner is positive that the easier it is to maintain a yacht the more time the crew will have for the guests on board.
Gabe Newell is known all over the world as the creator of Valve Corporation, but he is also the founder of Inkfish project, an organization supporting scientific research and marine exploration, and the new gigayacht will play an active role in it.
Inkfish fleet already features a submersible, robotic modules and a support vessel, and now, there is also a lab onboard the Leviathan, designed specifically for conducting scientific research in hard-to-reach waters. The images unveiled by Oceanco were made by renowned photographer, Guillaume Plisson, in the Bahamas and feature a well-appointed dive centre on board the Leviathan, as Newell is an avid diver and plans to use the vessel not only for pleasure, but for deep-sea exploration, too.
The delivery of the yacht, as well as her technical characteristics have already been covered by ilodka.com in the article “Leviathan: Oceanco superyacht destined to change industry”.
