The ambitious project is a combination of newest technologies, high efficiency and ultimate luxury
The sailing superyacht has hit the water at Perini Navi’s facility in the town of Marina di Carrara. After the bankruptcy in 2021, the brand was acquired by The Italian Sea Group, which seems to have benefited both sides: the shipyard brought its know-how related to creating luxury sailboats, and received the opportunity to expand production capacity and increase the number of orders. The fact that Katana is already the fourth in the series of 60-metre ketches by Perini Navi is the best confirmation.
The yacht was developed in collaboration with renowned naval architect, Ron Holland. The project’s credo was formulated in the following way: “to offer a unique sailing experience, where safety, comfort and performance are the absolute protagonists”.
The boat features a classical exterior, with a sharp bow, a spindle-shaped body and an elegant stern overhang. Pirini Navi’s signature design feature – the flybridge – is definitely here, too, as almost all the superyachts by the yard are flybridge. Katana’s flybridge is home to an upper helm station, a lounge with a dining are, a jacuzzi and a sunpad.
The hull with a length of 60 m and a beam of 11.4 m and the superstructure are all aluminium, while the masts, booms and rigging are of carbon fibre. This solution allowed for a lighter construction and a generous volume: the yacht’s displacement is 570 tons, with the internal volume under 500 GT.
One of the vessel’s key innovations is her updated sail system. There are two forestays with furlers and a short bowsprit forward, with the total sail area of about 2000 sq. m. The designers underscore the fact that the enhanced system has made handling more convenient and improved the performance characteristics considerably: the provisional top speed is up to 15.5 knots, while the recommended cruising speed is 12 knots.
In addition, the yacht is equipped with the latest generation dynamic positioning system, which allows her to maintain her position and heading autonomously without an anchor, thus enhancing her safety and comfort of navigation even more.
The interiors are owed to French designer, Remi Tessier, who can combine traditions and most modern features skillfully. In addition to a spacious saloon, there is a master suite and five guest cabins, whose style can be described as understated elegance, where every single detail was meticulously planned both in terms of aesthetics and ergonomics.
At present Katana is about to start her sea trials, with the delivery scheduled for early 2025.
