For years the waters of Yuznhy port have been used for cargo operations like transshipment and storage of goods, but recently Moscow government has made a number of decisions aimed at terminating commercial activities in the area and transforming it into a recreational zone.
The test launch of sailing yachts in the water area of Yuzhny port, which is 1 km wide and has an overall area of about 14 hectares, has become the first step in this direction. When relevant infrastructure construction is coordinated and complete, Moscow residents will have an alternative seasonal water route from southern and south-eastern districts of the city to the central, northern and north-western parts of the capital. Provided the permission is granted, one will be able to follow the river route to Kazan and even Ufa. Thus, last year river cruise named Golden Ring that starts at South River Terminal, goes on through the waters of Nizhny Novgorod and then back through North River Terminal, was revived.
The trip on August 20 took place in the immediate vicinity of the business class city area named Portland that is currently under construction. In addition to housing, there will be a 400-metre long “creative” embankment featuring a pier for electric water taxis, a pontoon pool, various sports facilities and playgrounds.
